"Come Back Like Jordan, Wearing the 4-5"

How it is that I'm up at 4:25 in the morning (or, simply, How My Mind Works)...

So I can't sleep tonight for whatever reason, chalk it up to jet lag or the fridge/freezer raid at 1 am that turned up a pint of Haagen Dazs...I start getting some ideas for something I want to work on so I turn on my computer (this is around 2:15 am), then I decide to read a fine blog called "Scribblings of a Metropolitician" which discusses life in Korea and a whole lot more. He posted on the Michael Richards tirade and since I hadn't seen it yet, I decide to go over to youtube and check it out, which then causes me to watch the Letterman apology. Then as I'm reading the rest of Metropoltician that I ignored while in China, reading about Korea (and having youtube open) for whatever reason causes me to decide to search for H.O.T, namely the song "Hope" which is a favorite of mine (for its own random reasons). Then I remeber another H.O.T from that period that I haven't heard in a long time and so I decide to search for that, except I don't know the English, Chinese, or (most importantly) Korean name...So I decide to use wikipedia (what did people do 2 years ago?) and find the name, but fail to find any video. Then in my infinite wisdom, I start searching for other Korean music favorites and find myself watching the video of an Uhm Jung Hwa song that I liked, complete with Chinese subtitles. So now instead of having a vague inkling of what the song means, I can actually understand the lyrics. Splendid! That gets me to see if I can find the KTV of the classic Yuki/Yoo Seung Jun song, "Can't Wait." Well, I failed in that quest (at least on youtube), but the idea sparks in me a new search for a variety of Chinese ktvs. When all that's said and done, it is now, well 4:30 in the morning and I've yet to get started on those ideas...wow!

Random News and Reviews

okay, so here are some interesting/funny stories that I've come across over the past week and never bothered to post:

If we have such a gas problem, why don't our officials do anything about it?
So it seems that many of our senators and congressmen are far from a model for gas conservation as they're riding in huge, gas guzzling SUVs and only going a few blocks...

No Love for Foie
Despite all the problems the city has, Chicago's willing to ignore education and crime problems and instead focus on foie gras. One city councilmen's pet cause is now policy for the entire city. It's completely idiotic and I wonder what effect it will have on the top restaurants in the city that serve foie.

The Seinfeld Summit
It's such a great title I had to reference it, but the larger point of the article, which I wholeheartedly agree with, was that this last Sino-American summit at the White House was totally pointless.

Not really fiction, not really reality
Yesterday was the national release of the movie "United 93" and much has been written about this movie already. I haven't seen it yet (I can't remember when I was last at the movies here), but it just strikes me as a bit strange. I disagree with those who argue that this movie is "too soon" because there has already been a number of movies made about what happened on 9/11. The reality is that we have yet to find out the whole truth of what happened on that day. The fact that almost 5 years later the government still isn't releasing the tapes from flight 93 is cause to wonder what really happened. The government, especially this administration, has lied to the people so much already that it makes it impossible to accept what they are saying without actual proof. The whole "let's roll" story sounds good, but its the sort of story that people want to hear, to pump them up, and to take their mind away from the reality of what went down. I have no problem with the idea of the movie, but at this point, its going to be considered by many to be a "true" story when in reality much of its closer to fiction than it is truth.

Currently Listening
Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living
By Streets
see related

I love the Streets and their new album doesn't dissapoint, I especially like the song "Two Nations" with such classics as:

"Two nations divided, By a common language, And about two hundred years of new songs and dancing, But the difference is language, And just the bits you got wrong,'Cause we were the ones who invented the language"

"And I keep having to say that I'm only joking
In New York when I have to buy fags on the road"

"Biggy man, god bless America and that
But you lot keep killing all your best talent
We build up our stars and then papers sweep on them
And you build on stars and maniacs shoot them"

"Understated is how we prefer to be
That's why I've sold three millions and you've never heard of me"

"But don't shoot idols, we fight football rivalries"

"We don't shoot idols our police shoot instead
Up my road the police just thought a yout dead
Cos they guessed he might've been a bit of a terrorist threat"

"Cos I'm proud we gave you people like John Lennon
Even though you shot him as well"

It's good stuff, damn funny, sarcastic, and also has a few strong messages...

This blog has suffered from benign neglect lately, mainly because I've been trying to avoid the internet and do things that are mildly useful and may even border on being beneficial for society (yeah right) and yet I still push on and consider starting yet another blog...

If I do so, is there anyone else who would like to contribute to a general blog about China? I'm looking to have something all-encompassing, a bit of politics, a bit of culture, some photos, some mp3s...we'll see...Then again, is blogging destroying my writing?

haha, sorry, work sucks...for those who are still in school, appreciate it while you can!!!
